Overview

As mentioned in the quest description, Elite code or “1337” is one example of a code arising in plain sight. A substitution code, 1337 has symbols for each letter in the English alphabet. The code is most prominent in internet cultures and as a result, there are various adaptations of the language, with multiple symbols for each letter. Originating in the late 1980’s, leet speak was prompted by computer programmers using systems of exclusively text-type information. With no specific spelling regulations, 1337 allowed IT insiders to quietly exchange technological information and prevent it from any malicious hacking. While some purists believe only numbers can be used, multiple encodings can be overlapped to increase protection of the information. Currently, 1337 has expanded far beyond the hacking community and can be used in online gaming, blogs and Facebook. It can also be used to encrypt passwords and get past spamming filters.
